Google is planning to build ultra-high speedĀ broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the country. Santa Cruz could be one of them — but we need to act now!
Imagine sitting in a rural health clinic, streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web and discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York. Or downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes. Or collaborating with classmates around the world while watching live 3-D video of a university lecture. Universal, ultra high-speed Internet access will make all this and more possible. – from Official Google Blog: Our Experimental Fiber Experiment
Google’s plan is to deploy 1 Gbps, fiber optic connections directly to people’s homes. This connection would be 2,000 percent faster than what’s available now in Santa Cruz.
Google will lay groundwork to provide a true Open Access network by allowing any vendor access to high-quality infrastructure — from startups to more traditional, from a small startup to Cable and DSL providers. This will allow for choice and competition, increasing speed and reliability while lowering prices for all users.
Google is asking local governments and residents to express their interest in the fiber optic trial, and to provide information about their community by completing a request for information by March 26, 2010.
We need all of you to TAKE ACTION and help convince Google that Santa Cruz should be one of the selected communities.
